Obaggo Update: The Plastic Bag Store

Writer's picture: David NewDavid New

Greetings, Obaggo community! This week I want to share with you a wonderful exhibit that I just experienced at Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, called "The Plastic Bag Store." If you can find the time for a visit to Mass MoCA, it is an amazing place, a rambling old factory complex-turned art museum, and The Plastic Bag Store exhibit was just extended through November 3, 2024.

Here is a video from the Mass MoCA website, and some photos from my visit.

As described on Mass MoCA's website, "The Plastic Bag Store is an immersive, multimedia experience by Brooklyn-based artist Robin Frohardt that uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of single-use plastics.

Everything in the store is made of single use plastic, mostly bags. Very clever, and a bit unsettling, and it hits a pretty close to home.

My personal favorite...

Of course, everyone receiving this post is already sensitized to the proliferation and infiltration of single-use plastics into our lives. But this exhibit is particularly impactful, and I recommend for everyone, especially for school-age children.

Perhaps someday, maybe 100 years from now, people will look back at art like this and wonder why it took us so long to solve the plastic pollution problem. Let's hope we've figured it out by then.

We drive our bags to Market Basket and they're turned into Park Benches for our Campus. 🤗

Replying to

We offer free shipping to Oregon now, and you can recycle your disks at the same places you can take your loose plastic bags (use our map-based drop-off directory to find the closest location). Or you or your school or business can become a drop-off location for disks.
